Osman Khan:
Road to Hybridabad

In Road to Hybridabad, Osman Khan invites visitors on an (im)migrant’s journey to Hybridabad: a place at the border where stories are layered, merged, and retold. Visitors are encouraged to use the gallery guide and map found at the entrance to chart their own course through multiple galleries. Along the way, visitors interact with fantastical figures found in folklore (in particular those from South Asia, the Middle East, and other Muslim and immigrant traditions) that Khan has reinterpreted through the lenses of contemporary technologies and his own identity formation. These commissioned work includes an animatronic djinn that demands a spoken password found only in a side reading room, drone-operated flying carpets trapped in a Taj Mahal-inspired birdcage, a wall-destroying sound system/cannon on the bed of a pickup truck, and an AI named Scheherezade who listens and retells stories.

Exhibition Catalog

Following the opening of the exhibition, I continue to work with Khan and the curator on a 200-page exhibition catalog. The hardcover catalog includes essays from Alexandra Foradas, Gunalan Nadarajan, and Juliette Singh; images of the exhibition and the installation process; and a complete list of readings from the Re-Reading Room.
